31 Weeks

It's crazy how I planned on updating this blog ALL the time when I first started it. Now I feel like I barely have a second to even think about writing!! I'm finding it hard to believe that I'm already 31 weeks.... I can't understand where all the time has gone. I truly feel like I was JUST 20 weeks yesterday.... I feel like the 20's absolutely zoomed by. Now I'm sitting here saying that our little boy will be here in NINE weeks..... seriously? I'm no where near ready!!

The pregnancy has been going extremely well. I've definitely found myself feeling more tired as the weeks go by (and my tummy gets bigger!). Usually around 1:30-2:00 in the afternoon, I feel like my eyes absolutely can't stay open. It's really difficult! But I'm somehow managing to get through each day.

I have found myself getting somewhat obsessed about my placenta. I know, how funny does that sound?? But seriously.... we went in for our appointment about three weeks ago and my doctor did a quick ultrasound in his office to check if my placenta had moved up since my 20 week ultrasound. He said it was still low, but that there was a very good chance it could continue to move up through the third trimester. But of course, it wasn't what I was hoping to hear. I wanted it to be a non-issue at that point. He said at my 20 week scan, my placenta was about 2.5 cm away from the cervical opening. Everything I have read (and trust me, I've now done a TON of research!) says as long as it's 2 cm or more away from the cervical opening, a vaginal delivery can still be done. So I've tried to release my worries and wait until we know more. But it's so hard when I'm working SO hard to achieve a VBAC with this baby.... if my stupid placenta is the reason I can't even attempt it, I will be very upset.

We also met with a doula a few weeks ago and I absolutely LOVED her! We spent three hours talking and I definitely clicked with her. I need to get on the ball and get her hired before she gets booked with someone else in November, but I'm kind of waiting until my appointment on Monday when I can speak with the doctor about my placenta before we set anything in stone. But I'm absolutely psyched about the idea of her being my doula during labor and delivery... she's wonderful!!

Baby Boy (who STILL remains nameless) has been moving like crazy over the last few weeks. I love laying down and watching my entire belly do rolls. I'm even starting to be able to make out body parts, which is pretty creepy! He gets the hiccups at least three times a day, which is so cute but gets awfully annoying after awhile. It feels like a muscle twitch that lasts for about 20 minutes! He favors lying on my right side, so the whole right side of my belly will be totally solid and sometimes I'll see his booty push up above my belly button. It's truly more entertaining than anything on TV!

Jackson started preschool this week, which has been really exciting! I actually bawled my eyes out the first day I dropped him off. He just looked like such a big boy when I left, it was hard to believe that my little baby is truly growing up! Here's a couple pictures of my little man before going to school for the very first time!

I also started seeing a chiropractor about three weeks ago and I love her! When I started out, my pelvis was completely out of alignment, which she said definitely could have contributed to Jackson not being positioned well when he was born, therefore leading to the c-section. Well, after seeing her three times a week, for the last four appointments, my pelvis is FINALLY completely aligned!! So I'm hoping that will make a huge difference when it comes to having this little guy.

Here's a few belly shots we took a couple nights ago.... I do have to admit, I adore my baby bump. :)

I promise to update again soon! Hard to believe there's only 63 days left of this pregnancy, AHHH!!!!

25 Weeks

I am feeling so horrible that I haven't been keeping up with this poor blog over the last six weeks! Things just got really busy and I had a hard time sitting down and writing. I know I'll regret it someday, since it's so much fun to look back and read my experience with the pregnancy. But I'm back now, I promise! So wow... my little baby is not so little anymore! Apparently it's the size of an EGGPLANT now and could possibly weigh a little over two pounds! Keep growing, baby!!!

So pretty much everyone knows by now, but we will be welcoming another beautiful little BOY into our family in November! There was ab
solutely no denying that this is another little guy.... he was proud to show of the goods! I knew immediately that he was a boy before the ultrasound tech was able to tell us.... I was the one that shouted out, "That's totally a boy!" It was really fun and exciting! My favorite memory of that day was when Eric and I were driving home from dinner and no one knew but us.... and we started talking about "our boys".... I actually started crying when I was able to say that! I love saying "our boys".... there's something so special about that. In fact, I'm tearing up right now while typing it and re-reading it. Good 'ole pregnancy hormones! The ultrasound itself was fantastic.... our little guy was measuring right at 20 weeks and he weighed in at a whopping 11 ounces! Hard to believe how much he's grown since then. We got to see a closeup of his cute lips and nose, we saw him sucking his thumb, drinking the amniotic fluid, and playing with his little hands! It was the coolest ultrasound I have ever had. He looked very healthy and he was super active the whole time. Here's a profile picture of his sweet face:

We'll be going in for another ultrasound in the next month or so because my placenta was low lying, so they want to make sure it has moved up. The last thing I want to hear is that I'll be dealing with placenta previa (which is when the placenta covers the cervix, thus requiring a c-section since baby can't get out!). But my doctor seemed 100% confident that the placenta will have moved up on it's own, which happens 95% of the time with a low lying placenta. So I haven't allowed myself to even remotely worry about it and I'm looking at it as another opportunity to see our little man again!

Otherwise, this pregnancy has really started kicking my booty.... my tummy is getting gigantic and I've started feeling EXTREME exhaustion. I'm praying the fatigue is nothing to worry about.... I had my gestational diabetes test yesterday, so hopefully I won't hear anything today and that will mean I passed!

We've had a VERY eventful couple weeks around here. A little over a week ago, Jackson decided it would be fun to jump on Mommy and Daddy's bed and fell off. Long story short, we spent the afternoon in the ER to discover that he had fractured his elbow. He had to have his arm in a splint for a week, and we just got the cast put on this Wednesday. He's been such a trooper, but it has definitely knocked me down a few notches. I dealt with a lot of guilt and such, but thankfully he'll only have to wear the cast for two weeks and it will be taken off on August 17th! He thinks it's pretty cool.... he loved having everyone sign it! Here's a couple pictures of my brave boy!

So while it's been a very stressful week, I know that everything is going to be okay and God was definitely watching over my sweet boy when this happened! I am VERY proud to announce that Jackson is now 100% potty trained!!! He caught on SO quickly, I was super surprised. It literally took three days and he had it down.... such a great feeling and I couldn't be more proud of him!

Baby boy #2 (who still doesn't have a name as of now!) has become so active, it's unbelievable! My entire tummy will start to do rolls and sometimes I'm actually able to see a body part push out the side of my stomach! Such a fun experience. Jackson is SO excited to be getting a little brother.... he jumped up and down and screamed when we told him. It was so cute. He talks to "baby brother" every day and tells him how much he loves him. He'll stroke my tummy and say, "I can't wait to meet you!".... he's going to be an amazing big brother!

I'm also happy to report that I'm STILL down three pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight! Hopefully this means I can truly keep my goal at gaining no more than 20 pounds this entire pregnancy. Here's a couple pictures we took when we visited Silver Mountain last weekend!

Only FIFTEEN weeks left until this little miracle joins our family!!!

19 Weeks

I can't believe I didn't update last week! It was very busy and crazy around here, I just didn't seem to find the time. But it's INSANE to me that I'm already 19 weeks.... and according to The Bump.com, the baby is the size of a mango! I also read on another site that the baby is the size of a Subway 6 inch sub.... and of course, I read that the evening after devouring one that day, ha ha. Gotta love it being compared to food every single week.

The very exciting news is that we have our BIG ultrasound tomorrow afternoon! I am so unbelievably excited, but also very anxious and nervous. I'm VERY much looking forward to knowing if this is a little boy or girl, but I'm mainly focused on making sure our sweet child is healthy. I just want to know that everything is okay in there. So I'll feel much better when we know that everything is developing as it should, etc.... and finding out the gender is just icing on the cake! Both Eric and I are completely thrilled at the prospect of either boy or girl. Unfortunately, I feel like I've been getting a lot of pressure from different sources that they're hoping this is a girl. It's bothered me quite a bit since I could care less of the gender since this baby is a BLESSING, regardless of the gender. I guess I'm just super sensitive these days, so I'm trying to brush it of and remain focused on just me, Eric, Jackson, and this little one. I can't wait to know that Little Turkey is happy, healthy, and enjoying its time in Mommy's tummy!

Otherwise, everything else is going great! I have been feeling the baby move more and more with every passing day. The movements are getting much stronger, which has been fun! Last night, Eric put his head on my tummy and started talking to the baby. The second he started talking, the baby kicked me HARD.... the hardest I've ever felt it! It was pretty awesome and a very special moment. :) I love feeling it move!!!

We'll be getting a DVD of the entire ultrasound, so I'll definitely be posting it after we announce to the family what we're having! Wish us luck tomorrow!!!

The Nineteenth Week:

  • Your baby has the same awake and sleep patterns of a newborn. He has a favorite position for sleep and recognizable active and rest periods.
  • Throughout baby's body, nerves are being coated with a fatty substance called myelin, which insulates the nerves so that impulses can flow smoothly.
  • Scalp hair becomes apparent this week. It has sprouted and continues to grow.
  • The milk teeth buds have already developed and over the next few days the buds for the permanent teeth will begin to form behind the milk teeth.
  • If baby is female the uterus starts to develop. If you're having a girl, the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes are in place.
  • If it's a boy, the genitals are distinct and recognizable.
  • Your baby is swallowing amniotic fluid and his or her kidneys are making urine.
  • Your little one's size is around 6.02 inches (15.3cm) and 8.47 ounces (240gm).

17 Weeks

So Little Turkey is the size of an onion this week. Lind of creeps me out since I just made potato soup last weekend that I had to cut up a whole onion for it! Pretty astonishing when I think about it though.... holding an onion in my hand and imagining that's how big the baby is now. CRAZINESS. How is time seriously going this quickly??

This week has brought along a LOT of growing pains and just general discomfort. My lower back has been hurting quite a bit which has been no fun at all. I can only imagine how bad it's going to be when I'm 38 weeks and praying for the baby to make its appearance! But every single pain and frustration is worth it because it's all happening so this miracle has a place to grow big and strong. I would do it all a million times over in a heartbeat.

Speaking of heartbeat, the baby's heart rate is still averaging around 160 beats per minute. I've rarely heard it any slower than that, and if it was, it was at 158! Even though I know all the old wives' tales about faster heart rate meaning girl, slower heart rate meaning boy.... it still is fun to guess! Although I'm starting to feel 100% positive that this is another little boy! Everyone that I know (women on my message boards) that are due in November are having boys! Seriously.... I think we're at 15 boys and only 5 girls so far. It's pretty strange! And it certainly makes you wonder if there truly are "girl seasons" and "boy seasons". Guess we'll find out in another three weeks or so!

The anxiousness has started creeping in about the ultrasound. Don't get me wrong, I am SO excited to finally see our baby on that screen again and to find out if we're having pink or blue! But it's hard to think about those things because I'm just so focused on the baby's health. That's ALL that is important to me. I remember starting to get nervous around this time with Jackson too.... in the end, you just want to hear that your baby is healthy and doing well in there. But I have faith that all is well and I just can't wait!!!

The Seventeenth Week:

  • By week 17, your baby weighs about 4.97 ounces (140gm) and is 5.12 inches (13cm) long.
  • He or she has a much more normal "human" appearance now. She holds her head more erect and her body and limbs are longer in proportion to her head.
  • Pads are forming on his tiny fingertips and toes. Soon those individual swirls and whorls will be apparent.
  • Her eyes are looking forward now, but they are still firmly closed.
  • Meconium (composed of products of cell loss, digestive secretion and swallowed amniotic fluid), is accumulating in the bowel. This black gooey substance will become your baby's first poop!
  • The umbilical cord is growing thicker and stronger and continues to rush blood and nutrients to your growing baby.
  • If your child is male the prostate begins to develop.
  • Her skeleton is transforming from cartilage to bone. The bones remain flexible to make the journey through the birth canal easier.

16 Weeks

Once again, time is going so fast I'm having a hard time keeping up! In many ways, I love it because it means each day is another day closer to meeting our little miracle. But at the same time, each day is another day closer to when our little miracle will BE HERE, and that's really overwhelming! So much to get done in such a short amount of time!

This week has been pretty non-eventful, other than the common stretching pains that seem worse this time than with Jackson. Mainly my right side has been KILLING me. But I can feel the top of my uterus just below my belly button now, so things are definitely stretching and moving in there! Plus, anytime I listen to the baby with the doppler now, I find the heartbeat WAY up high now, so goes to show that it's no longer in my pelvis anymore.

I haven't been feeling the baby move as much as last week, but I've read that's totally normal. I'm sure it completely depends on the position the baby is in. It's hard to believe that in about THREE weeks, we'll be finding out if this is a boy or girl! Of course, Eric and I are thoroughly convinced it's another boy, which we'll be just as thrilled with! I do LOVE the thought of Jackson having a little brother to roughhouse with and teach all of his tricks to. ;) So we're in a win-win situation because we'll be so happy with either! But it's just hard to believe that we're already almost to this point.... it feels like YESTERDAY when I was telling myself that we have about 10 WEEKS until the big ultrasound. Now it's only a few weeks away.... crazy!

Fun facts about Little Turkey this week:

The Sixteenth Week:

  • Fat begins to form underneath skin, providing your baby with insulation for the coming months.
  • Did you know that both baby and placenta are now about the same size?
  • Your little one has reached 4.57 inches (11.6cm) and approximately 3.53 ounces (100gm).
  • His head and neck are held straighter now.
  • This is a week of "mights!" You might hear the tiny thumps of his heartbeat with an external monitor now. The genitals are developed sufficiently that an experienced sonographer might be able to determine if your baby is a boy or a girl.
  • Her heart is pumping as much as 6 gallons of blood a day and beats at a rate about double your heart rate.
  • If you could take a peek inside, you would witness your child's reflexes in action! (Sucking, swallowing and blinking are now evident.) She is probably even hiccuping even though you don't feel it yet!
  • Your baby has learned to breathe! This is apparent from the regular movements of his chest. Isn't it amazing that he is able to breathe "underwater," inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid? These actions help the lungs to develop and grow.

The scale is moving.... DOWN?!?

So I stepped on the scale again this morning and I'm officially down SEVEN pounds since I found out I was pregnant. Now normally you'd NEVER hear me complaining about losing weight! But it seems so strange to me, especially since my appetite has pretty much gotten back to normal. Eric is just guessing that my metabolism is quicker, which would be awesome! But I can guarantee that I am NOT trying to lose weight while carrying this baby.... I'm definitely trying to keep my weight gain at the maximum of 20 pounds for the whole pregnancy (since I started with some extra to begin with!), so I keep waiting for those pounds to start creeping on. I believe I was already up 15 pounds or so with Jackson at this point, so I'm hoping this means I won't gain 65 pounds like I did with him! ;) But as long as my doctor isn't concerned, I won't be either! I'll just continue to make sure I'm getting the correct amount of calories and nutritious food and be happy with that. But let me tell you.... once this little angel arrives, the weight loss game is ON!!!!

15 Weeks

I think it's so funny when I see my little baby compared to a piece of food.... it seriously makes it difficult to eat that food that whole week! So Little Turkey is now the size of an orange.... crazy to think about when I hold an orange up to my belly and see how big that actually is! But it's understandable when I look at my tummy now.... there is NO mistaking I'm pregnant anymore, especially when I'm wearing maternity clothes. Yet I'm still down around 6 pounds since the beginning of the pregnancy! I suppose that's a good thing since I started the pregnancy with some extra fluff. ;)

We had our doctor's appointment last Thursday and it was short and boring, just how I like it! That means everything is normal and fine. We went in, they took my weight and blood pressure, and then just sat with the doctor and talked more in depth about my VBAC plans. I would truly like to do everything in my power to avoid another c-section. My theory is this: as long as everything is fine with me and the baby, I will not consent to a c-section. I will be doing this birth all natural with no epidural. I plan on laboring upright as much as possible, including LOTS of walking and squatting. This birth will be so much different in terms of who will be there.... it will just be me, Eric, and our doula throughout the entire labor. If it looks like everything is going to happen, I will have my mom come in at the end right before the baby comes out. Otherwise, I truly feel like I missed out on that bonding experience with my husband when Jackson was born. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED having everyone there supporting me.... but it was just too much pressure. I started feeling guilty that everyone was having to wait around, and that should be the last thing on my mind during that time. So it's a very deep and personal decision that I've done a lot of soul searching on. Needless to say, I'm so excited yet terrified at the same time!

So our next appointment is on June 17th, and from there we will schedule our BIG ultrasound!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! I'm going CRAZY not knowing if this is a little boy or girl! I've felt from the very beginning that it's a girl, but deep down I'm thinking it's probably a boy! Either way, I could care less.... I truly just want a healthy baby in my arms! After our two losses, it definitely put things in perspective on how much I don't care what the gender of our next child is.... I'm just so ready for our family to expand and I know God has a plan for this little one inside of me.

The Fifteenth Week:

  • You may begin to feel some fluttering movements as baby kicks, flails, twists and turns (but don't panic if you don't yet). She can also grasp, squint, frown, grimace and maybe suck her thumb!
  • Your baby's legs have grown longer than the arms and the body is now longer than the head.
  • And you'll be happy to note that he is moving those arms and legs often!
  • His skin is very thin -- so thin blood vessel are visible. It's covered by a fine, soft layer of hair called lanugo. Lanugo comes from a Latin word meaning "down." This hair is thought to help insulate your little boy.
  • The three tiny bones in his middle ear have begun to harden. The auditory centers in your baby's brain haven't developed yet, so she might not really understand what you say but her hearing capacity is in the process of developing.
  • Fingernails and toenails are growing.
  • Eyebrows are beginning to grow and even the hair his head is sprouting. It will probably change color and texture after birth.
  • All this and your little one is an amazing 3.98 inches (10.1cm) long and may weigh 2.47 ounces (70gm).

14 Weeks

WOW.... Little Turkey is the size of a lemon this week! It is absolutely amazing me how fast this little miracle is growing. Not too add how astonished I am that time is starting to go so quickly. The time was going SO slow in the first few weeks, and now I can feel it speeding up with each week. But each day is one day closer to holding my sweet little baby in my arms!

I'm thrilled to be able to say that I have finally started feeling the baby move! We were sitting at a park yesterday afternoon and I suddenly felt this distinct "thump". I don't even know that I can describe it as a thump, but it was definitely noticeable and 100% different from my normal gas bubbles. Ever since yesterday, I've felt it quite a few times.... it's such a miraculous feeling. To know that it's my baby moving inside of me and I can FEEL it is indescribable. I can't wait until Eric will be able to feel it from the outside. Those are some of my favorite memories from when I was pregnant with Jackson. We would literally lay in bed for an hour with his hand on my belly and watch our son wiggle around.... nothing short of AMAZING.

I've decided to start walking every single day. The weather has gotten so beautiful, it's an easy decision for me! I'm going to make a routine... when Eric gets home from work each evening, him and Jackson can have some Daddy/Son time and I'll take Lucy for a 30 minute walk. That way I'll get a little break to myself and also be getting good exercise each day! I learned my lesson with my pregnancy with Jackson that I MUST get exercise every day... not only is it good for me and the baby, but I feel SO wonderful emotionally afterwards.

We have a doctor's appointment on Thursday morning. I'm super excited about it, even though I know it'll probably just be a standard appointment! We'll probably get to hear the baby with the doppler (which I get to do at home, hee hee!) and he'll measure my uterus and just talk with us about any questions or concerns. I do plan on talking with him more about my VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).... we talked a lot about it at my first appointment with him last year, but I definitely have some more questions that I'd like answered. So hopefully it'll be a great appointment!

I also contacted the very first doula that I'd like to interview! She e-mailed me back the same day with her cell phone number, so I plan on calling her in the next few days. I'm so excited about this for some reason! I wish so much that I had a doula with Jackson's birth.... I feel like it possibly could have changed the outcome of the whole thing. But either way, I know it'll be VERY beneficial for me with this labor and delivery. So I can't wait to chat with her!

Here's some fun facts about Little Turkey this week!

The Fourteenth Week

  • Thyroid gland has matured and your baby begins producing hormones which will be used throughout his or her life.
  • In boys, the prostate gland develops
  • In girls, the ovaries move from the abdomen to the pelvis
  • Your little one may have learned to suck his thumb by this point!
  • Your child's bones are getting harder and stronger by the day!
  • Your baby's skin is very transparent still
  • Lanugo (very fine hair) covers the baby's body and will continue to grow until 26 weeks gestational age - Generally this will be shed prior to birth. Its purpose is to help protect baby's skin while in all that water!
  • Your baby is 3.42 inches (8.7cm) long and weighs about 1.52 ounces (43 grams) - approximately the weight of a letter!

Sweet and cold...

I just sent Eric to the grocery store at 9:00 PM to get some popsicles. It's going to be a long, long summer....

13 Weeks

Little Turkey is the size of a peach this week! Needless to say, it's going to be a little difficult for me to consume any peaches for the next seven days. It truly blows my mind how fast this little one is growing. Only two months ago, it was the size of the period following this sentence. And it's only going to grow faster and faster! The other big milestone this week? I've FINALLY made it to the second trimester, woo hoo!

One of the most amazing things that has happened over the last few days is listening to the baby with the doppler. Not only can I listen to its heartbeat, but now I can hear it moving around! This one definitely likes to move EVERYWHERE.... sometimes I have to chase it with the doppler probe. I also heard it have the hiccups the other day! That was pretty amazing! It was just this steady "bloop" sound every couple seconds. I remember Jackson used to get the hiccups ALL the time when I was pregnant with him. I'm wondering if this one will be the same. I think it's very possible that I might have felt little movements here and there. It's so hard to tell at times! Sometimes I'll feel some little bubbles, but then I proceed to have some crazy gas a couple minutes later, ha ha! But there have been maybe two or three distinct times that it has felt different. Regardless, it'll only be a few more weeks before I'll start feeling it for sure! I believe I started feeling Jackson move around 15 weeks.... it felt like popcorn popping in my lower tummy. I can't WAIT to feel big strong movements with this one.... that's one of my favorite parts of being pregnant.

The other news is I have officially "popped." I tried on one of my new maternity shirts yesterday and almost fell over when I saw myself in the mirror. I guess when you see yourself every single day, it's hard to notice subtle differences. But once that shirt went on.... holy moly! My lower tummy is also getting hard.... I can feel the top of my uterus easily now. I definitely need to go get some maternity pants.... all of my normal jeans are getting pretty uncomfortable now! I'll post some belly pictures soon!

Here's some fun facts about Little Turkey this week!

The Thirteenth Week

  • Your infant is about 2.91 inches (7.4cm) and weighs around 0.81 ounce (23gm) - This is about the same weight as 4 quarters.
  • If you could peek in again you may spot your baby as he begins to practice inhaling and exhaling movements
  • Eyes and ears continue to move and develop
  • Baby's neck is getting longer, and the chin no longer is resting on his chest
  • Her hands are becoming more functional - Your baby may find it comforting to start playing with her fist.
  • At this point all nourishment is received from the placenta
  • On your next doctor visit you should be able to hear heartbeat with a Doppler by now - (Don't worry though if you can't, the heartbeat can be confirmed through U/S). Your baby's heartbeat is much rapider than your own and may remind you of the race towards birth that he is running!

Our 11 week ultrasound!

I'm really late in posting this, but here's a short video that we took during our 10 week ultrasound a few weeks ago! It was so amazing to see our little one moving around!!!

12 Weeks

Little Turkey is the size of a plum this week! I feel like I've REALLY been slacking on the journal and picture taking so far in this pregnancy! I think it's because I spent the first few weeks just trying to get through each day that passed, praying that my baby was still doing well! Once I hit nine weeks (when we discovered we lost our first angel), and we saw on the ultrasound that Turkey was still doing good, it started to get a little easier. And of course, my doppler keeps my sanity on a daily basis!

I'm finding it hard to comprehend that I'm almost done with the first trimester. It seems like time has gone SO slow, yet so quick at the same time. I know that time is truly going to fly by and this baby will be with us before we can blink an eye! If I have calculated it right, I believe we'll be finding out the gender in late June/early July. So in reality, that's not much longer!! I've had major girl vibes this whole pregnancy, but I truly don't care what we're having. I just want a healthy baby.... that's been my dream for SO long now. Jackson is SO excited to be a big brother.... we talk about the baby every day and he loves listening to it on the doppler. He's going to be an AMAZING brother, I can't wait.

I thought I was starting to feel better, but the last few days have been pretty rotten. I thought it was allergies, but I'm pretty sure I've come down with yet ANOTHER cold. Jackson has it too, so this is a really fun household to be in right now. This is my THIRD cold since I found out I was pregnant.... seriously?!? My fatigue is still awful and I've had another bout of horrible nausea today. I'm crossing my fingers it all goes away within the next couple weeks!

Here's some fun facts about Little Turkey this week!

The Twelfth Week

  • Vocal cords begin to form - While perhaps not quite ready to be introduced to the nearest opera stage, your infant will use these immediately following the moment of birth. Bet you can't wait to hear that first cry!
  • Those precious eyes begin to move closer together - Are you wondering if he will have mommy's crystal green eyes, daddy's laughing brown ones, or maybe out of the gene pool will emerge grandma's clear blue!
  • Ears shift to their normal place on the side of the head
  • Intestines move farther in to your child's body
  • His or her liver begins to function - Responsible for cleansing the blood, storing nutrients, and providing needed chemicals, this is an important event!
  • The pancreas begins to produce insulin
  • Guess what? Your baby's average size is now at a whopping length: 2.13 inches (5.4cm) and weight: 0.49 ounce (14gm)

Finally coming out of the shadows!

Well, now that I'm almost ELEVEN weeks pregnant, I've decided I'm feeling much more confident about starting my pregnancy blog! A little history: we have one beautiful little boy named Jackson. We had two devastating miscarriages at the end of last year that pretty much shook us to the core. We decided to take some time away from thinking about another baby and live our lives. I was working on losing some more weight and Eric was focused on finding a more fulfilling job.

On March 8th, Eric and I actually got in a pretty nasty argument. He had left and taken Jackson out to do something while I tried to cool off. It was the middle of the afternoon and I decided I wanted a small glass of wine to relax myself a little. I took a couple sips and suddenly felt this INTENSE feeling that I needed to make sure I wasn't pregnant. It's really funny when I look back on it now, because we were NOT trying to get pregnant, so I don't know why I had that feeling.... instinct, I guess! I had some leftover pregnancy tests under the bathroom sink, so I grabbed one and was BLOWN away to see the faintest of faint lines. I truly was in shock. COMPLETE shock. I called Eric immediately and asked him to come right home. At that moment, my mom called (she was on vacation on the east coast).... I swear, it was the connection we have that told her to call at that second! I told her that I was pretty sure I just got a positive result on a test. She was thrilled! It was a very special moment. :)

Eric got home and I just looked at him and told him, "I think I'm pregnant!" He stood there in shock for a couple seconds and then came to sit on the bed with me. He really didn't know what to say! He put his arms around me and told me that he just knew this time was going to be different. This is a moment I will always cherish with him.

So here's a couple pictures of my pregnancy tests! One picture of a beautiful, solid positive line and another picture with a progression (these were my internet cheapie tests!):

The first few weeks absolutely DRAGGED by. I took each week as a milestone, and thankfully I feel like time is starting to move at a more normal pace. We had an ultrasound at 5w6d where we saw the heartbeat for the first time! That was such a wonderful moment! We also discovered that I had a subchorionic hematoma in my uterus, which is basically a blood clot from where the placenta was attaching. Needless to say, it concerned me, but I tried not to let it consume me. I read that most of these bleeds either bled out or reabsorbed into the body, so I tried to look at the positives.

A few weeks went by and I was getting more and more nervous. We lost our first angel at 9 weeks, so I was VERY nervous about approaching that point. When I was 8w3d, I had some spotting and completely freaked out. We ended up going to the ER to make sure our little baby was okay. Long story short, everything was FINE.... I saw our little one and I couldn't believe how much it had grown! I could see its head, body, arm and leg buds.... it was awesome! The heart was beating at 178bpm, which was perfect. We're pretty sure the spotting was from the subchorionic bleed, because that was NO WHERE to be found on the ultrasound! Awesome! Here's a couple pictures of our little Turkey at 8w4d:

We've had one more ultrasound since then at 9w3d and everything looked perfect! I also purchased a fetal doppler of eBay and listen to the baby's heartbeat every night. It's a HUGE relief being able to know that everything is going okay in there. We have another appointment tomorrow where we'll get another ultrasound.... we'll be videotaping it, so I'll be sure to post it!
